I’m super excited to introduce my newest podcast, Funny Faith.

Christianity doesn’t really have a reputation for being funny. If anything it’s known for being kinda boring. Stuffy even.

But I believe humor and Christianity, when joined together, become a powerful force to be reckoned with–they go together like a preacher and three-point sermons. On Funny Faith, we take seriously the ways humor and faith bump up against each other. Our main focus is to help believers see the value of humor as a communicative tool when explaining deep things of the Christian faith. But we’ll also look at other aspects of how this relationship can be good–and bad.

Oh, and I bit about me. I’m a podcast producer, playwright, non-fiction author, fiction author, minister, and, like, 4,000 others things we won’t go into. Oh–almost forgot–my name is Jake Doberenz. I’ll be your host for this show. You’re gonna have to get used to me.

You might be thinking to yourself—perhaps you even said it out loud to your pet Iguana—“Jake, you can’t possibly have an entire podcast focusing on the relationship between humor and Christian faith, specifically focusing on how humor can be a positive tool for theological engagement with a world skeptical of religion.” Well, you’d be surprised. There’s a lot to talk about. Trust me, I made a list before I started this thing. I bet you we can squeeze quite a bit out on this topic and some of it might even be entertaining.

We’ll interview comedians about their work and then we’ll explore the ethics of dark humor. Maybe afterward we’ll check out the humorous content in the Bible. I don’t know, we might even get super crazy and ask and answer the question “Can Christians make fun of people?” It’s going to be wild.

There are so many ways we can communicate the Christian faith using humor as the medium. So in this podcast, we are going to dive into the ins and outs of this tactic and explore the ethical issues that pop up as well. You are going to want to tune in. We have a lot of cool conversations to have. And, we are going to have a lot of fun.
